Summer's In Full Swing!

All-Star Baseball is in full swing now! We've traveled to Statesboro each evening since Monday for the Firecracker Classic...tonight should be the last night, and we're hoping for a win! Joseph is in heaven playing ball...he's always the last one off the field, the last one out of the dugout to leave, and the last one to leave the ballpark...he is never too tired after a game to throw a few more balls or swing the bat a few more times!
Jessi & Jaimee are at Impact camp right now, which is the most wonderful place on earth, according to Jessi! It is such a refreshing, encouraging, and uplifting week for both of them. I pray their hearts will be open to what God has in store for them this week! Jessi's getting a double-dose this year....she will return from Impact on Friday, then will leave on Monday for another week of camp at Snowbird, which is in N. Carolina...this is the first time she's gone there, and I'm praying Snowbird will only build on what she's heard & learned this week at Impact.
A busy week is ahead of me as we prepare for VBS at Sardis Baptist....more about that in my next post!

A bat, a ball, and a boy

Well, the first night of All-Star Baseball Practice was tonight...2 hours of it! But Joseph loved every minute, so how could I be anything but happy? I have to admit, we are a sports loving family! We got his schedule also for the next month, and it looks like tournaments/games just about every Saturday & Monday through June, with practices in between. And some of those tournaments continue the next day (and the next day...) as long as we are winning. Well, who wants to lose?!
It's already a busy time of the year....Jessi & Jaimee both go to Impact camp June 6-10, Jessi goes to another camp, Snowbird, the week following that while we start Vacation Bible School on the 12th. VBS is probably the busiest yet most satisfying week of my life each year! I absolutely love it! I like to plan my week-long trip to the lake at the end of VBS week...it's my much deserved rest after such a busy week. Well, wouldn't you know it, the day we are scheduled to leave, Joseph has a ball tournament in Vidalia...but the girls will go on up, and we'll join them as soon as we can! I think I will take the whole month of July, and not plan one thing to do, unless it involves relaxing!
Right now, I'm off to sit on my front porch, glass of ice tea in hand, and just listen to the evening sounds....

Lazy Lake Daze

One more day until school is officially out! It's a half day today, so my plan is to pack some snacks & drinks, do a quick clean around the house, pick the kids up from school and then head to the lake for the afternoon. We purchased a new boat last weekend, and everyone's chomping at the bit to try it out! Boating is a hobby we happened upon 8 years ago, when a friend had his boat for sale, and he happened to ask Les to "try it out"...we did, and we've been hooked ever since. We enjoy the family time together... it's one of the few things that will entertain 4 kids (age range 10-21 yrs. old) and the parents as well. But the greatest enjoyment for me is being right in the middle of God's creation. I absolutely love nature, and if there was ever anyone who appreciated the glorious creation that God blessed us with, it's me! We marvel at the tiny tadpoles we see in the water's edge, and gaze at the clouds, trying to pick out the shapes that we see in them, and we enjoy the cool refreshing of the water on a hot summer's day. And it's all FREE! We serve an awesome God...I hope you slow down this summer and get outside and enjoy what God has provided!
Well, we're back from our afternoon on the lake....very relaxing, and just before we left Jaimee looked up and said "Doesn't that cloud look a lot like Pegasus?" Indeed it did! I couldn't get my camera out fast enough to snap the picture...but it was so clear I can still see it in my mind! Now off to bed....this chick is gonna sleep well tonight!

I Can See the Light at the End of the Tunnel!

It's Monday, and the very last Monday of this school year. It's been a long time coming, and I don't know who's happier to see it...me or the kids! It's now time to slow down and enjoy some quality family time together....school tennis team has ended, (though there will still be weekly practices) and Joseph's last ball game is tonight. His team ended in 2nd place this year, and Joseph had an awesome season! The busyness has been fun, but the slower pace of summer is always welcome.
Summer will bring church camps for Jessi & Jaimee, my backyard filled with all the little neighborhood boys playing ball, late night swim parties with friends, evenings spent in the swing on the front porch, the always fun week of Vacation Bible School, and our much anticipated trips to the lake! I absolutely LOVE summertime!

The Storm before the Calm

After a month of not blogging due to pure busyness...I get back on and realize I never posted this blog you're about to read...well, it's a month old now, but one I simply must share!

You've heard the saying "the calm before the storm"? Well, I must say it was the opposite way around in the Jenkins' household the last week or so. That's why it's been a couple of weeks since I've blogged. Spring Break week was wonderful...didn't do anything, didn't go anywhere (other than a trip to the movies & bowling), didn't blog, etc. Very relaxing, I must say....and it's a good thing because the next week, it all turned to chaos around here! Jessi had region tennis, Joseph's baseball games began , I subbed in Joseph's class at school Tues.-Thurs., Jaimee had region Track on Thursday....and THEN came Prom weekend! It started last Thursday night when Jessi tried on her prom dress which we had just picked up earlier in the week from being altered...I was at work, and I get this phone call that sounded like a forced calmness that said I MUST come home immediately (luckily we live only a few blocks from our grocery store)...the dress had been hemmed too short! Now this may not sound like much, but to a 15 yr. old it was basically the end of the world! Fortunately, I missed the total meltdown she had prior to the calm phone call! What could I do? It was 10:30pm Thursday night...the prom was Saturday. After calming her down, I told her what all mama's tell their babies...."I'll take care of it". I didn't know how, but this was not going to ruin her prom. Next morning, she woke up with a better attitude and decided that she would just buy some flats. If she was ok with that, I would be, too. That day was to be our Prom Preparation Shopping Day...we left at 7:30am...1. Hair Extensions/Trial Hairdo 2. Shopping for a fancy pair of flats (many, many stores later, she finally found a pair she could live with...mourning the beautiful heels we had bought 5wks ago that she couldn't wear). Overall, it was a good day. Early Saturday morning we met with others from her class to help disassemble the EBA Prom which had been on Friday night. We had a hair appt. in Martinez, and much later than planned, we arrived back home to start getting ready for the Jenkins County prom. About 45 min. before Jessi was to be in Millen for pictures, she came downstairs for me to adjust her dress in the back. As I did, horror above ALL horrors, the zipper on the back of the dress separated! The zipper pull would not budge...no amount of trying could get it moved back down the zipper. Thus, there was no way to get the dress off, although at that point, I hadn't a clue what could be done. In my mind, I'm thinking that there's no way for her to go to prom, but as a mom, your mind keeps churning trying to figure out what to do next. Jessi's Aunt Phyllis came by about that time (Phyllis has always been there for Jessi in every crisis! I faint very easily, so it's been Aunt FiFi who has held her hand in the emergency room more times than I care to count!) Well, we decided we would sew the dress up...on her...the only way to do it! So, if we'd have videoed this episode, I'm sure we'd have won $1,000,000.00 Jessi had to lay on her bed, tears streaming down her face, on her stomach, with her dress pulled over her head inside out, while I held the zipper together, and Phyllis sewed it up. It was quite the ordeal, but she made it to pictures, and then to prom. It ended up being the best night of her life according to her!

The Race

It seems that's the theme for the day...my alarm clock goes off every morning at 5:30am...I hit the snooze until 5:50am then get up at 6am. Works every morning...til today. I was in some sort of dream...all I remember is that I was decorating for some sort of party ( a western theme...no wonder I didn't want to get up!). There were cowboy boots everywhere! I distinctly remember putting boots on the tables to use for drinks, and deciding against that because my mother would NEVER drink out of a cowboy boot! I loved it! Anyway, when I did finally wake up enough to look at the clock, it was 6:45! We have to leave to go to the bus stop at 7:10! It's really not much a problem for a 10yr. old boy...pop-tart, clothes, brush teeth & hair...out the door! But teenage girls?! Let the race begin! Well, we pulled in at the bus stop alongside the bus, but , hey, we made it...I didn't have to drive to Waynesboro this morning...we missed the bus on Monday, and had to make the drive :(
The real race, though, is this afternoon, when we travel to Lyons, Ga to watch Jaimee in her track meet. She's running the 4x100 relay, the 4x400 relay and the 200 meter. They would have to roll me out of there on a stretcher, but Jaimee's got some stamina! And she's fast, too...so she should do well. I found this quote about running that I'd like to share and also give a big shout-out for the EBA JV Track Team..."Run, Team, Run!"

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a lion or gazelle – when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

What are the Choices?

I'm currently leading a Bible Study for the 7th grade girls at our school (EBA). We meet on Tuesdays, and today is the third week. Today's lesson is "Becoming Wise: Choices". It seems to imply that our choices are one thing that determines how wise we are. Who doesn't want to be wise? I do! Good choices in small decisions lead to good choices in big decisions. This stuff is good not only for 7th graders, but for everyone, no matter what age! We sometimes forget we have choices. We let life happen and play it by ear. But you'll never be truly fulfilled in life or become who God intends if you just let life happen to you. Colossians 2:9 says "Don't let others spoil your faith and joy with their philosophies, wrong and shallow answers based on men's thoughts and ideas, instead of on what Christ has said." (LB)...wow, we do that sometimes, don't we? I know I am guilty of letting others influence my decisions sometime! As a kid, teenager, or adult, we should always be asking ourselves, "Am I acting like the person I want to be? The person God intends for me to be?"
One of my favorite verses from today's study is Isaiah 30:21 "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" Why have I not noticed that verse in the Bible before? My decisions should be so simple! I'm going to do better at listening...to God...I want to be the person He intends for me to be!

Love, Sheila
